Avoiding Uncomfortable
IMPORTANT, MUST BE READ...Ive been doing some reading and listening to some podcast (rob wolf's guests) over this holiday season and one topic that has caught my attention is how a person can grow mentally and physically stronger through attempting uncomfortable challenges. In todays society our parents and the majority of kids are taught to "be careful" for fear of injury, failure, embarrassment etc... This is ingrained into our heads throughout our life and becomes automatic habit to be careful...afraid of public embarrassment, afraid of failure, afraid of some mental or physical discomfort. "Johnny don't run too fast you may scrap a knee, Susie its too cold to go outside today, Billy you don't have to participate in gym class because its dodge ball season (which they have now banned) and you are afraid of getting a bruise. This fear comes from a part of the brain that helped our ancestors(caveman) stay alive for millions of years. Flight or fight mode. Caveman sees saber tooth tiger, caveman runs or fights. Now it sounds something like this...individual is 30# overweight, cant do a push up and hasn't exercised in years. They understand a better diet, lifestyle and some form of exercise is needed, but they fear change, they fear being told they cant eat a certain food, they fear their family or friends may look at them as weird, they fear FAILURE. They give up before they have tried. This mindset is in all of us. In the book "Flinch" they describe this as "flinching" fearing something that wont actually hurt you but will actually help you through long term growth. Most of what we fear has no serious consequence at all, none. Its just we are told over and over, be careful, don't mess up, don't get embarrassed. Julien Smith, author of the Flinch describes how putting yourself into uncomfortable situations consistently equals growth and improvement because you teach your brain NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE and this leads to some huge stuff. It gives you the guts to quit that shitty job, the courage to step inside of that gym and start working out, the courage to stop eating 13 pounds of sugar a year. You attack challenging things with no fear, because you have silenced "The flinch". I have noticed this throughout the years as a competitive athlete and outdoorsman. Moments before stepping out into an event where you have seen 2 hours of athletes prior to you completely and utterly destroyed, makes you want to quit before it even starts. Moments before jumping into an ice bath. Moments before meeting a group of strangers. Moments before jumping into an icy river the first week of may or 100 meters into your 2000 meter row sprint. Moments of saying No to family or friends about eating certain foods or drinking. Once you have silenced that voice and embrace these challenges that MOST avoid, not only do you become stronger physically but most importantly mentally, you have set NO boundaries within yourself, you realize this fear of yours is not really a true life -threatening situation, and its at that moment............ that your life has changed dramatically.
At Garage Gym, you learn to silence the Flinch, you learn to grow through challenges in a controlled, safe environment.
