IMPORTANT, MUST BE READ...Yikes, this post is late but that's no problem because we have announced Justin Slattery as the Garage Gym September Client of the Month!!
Here's what Justin has to say about his experience:
I had fallen out of shape while living outside the states. I decided that when I came to upstate NY I would get back into shape and after browsing local gyms on the internet I found Garage Gym and sent them an email. I love the "garage" style gyms, I can't stand places like Planet Fitness. Josh responded very quickly and we set up a meeting. Once I saw the gym and Josh's dedication to fitness and custom based training programs, I knew this was where I wanted to train. I had some previous knowledge, but right away Josh and Alex pinpointed my weak spots and we began to fix them. I mostly trained aerobic/anaerobic energy systems (aka Crossfit) previously with little attention to specific program design, strength training and my form with the major lifts, so Alex structured a training program designed specifically around my weak spots. I saw my back squat, weighted chin-up, press, double unders, ring dips and my aerobic/anaerobic performance skyrocket. Diet was another thing, I work for a gourmet restaurant and they would set out leftovers at the end of the night. After discussing with Alex and Josh my body composition goals I decided I had to stop eating potatoes cooked in duck fat and fresh homemade french bread with our famous "cheese souffle" ( a mixture of onions, mayonnaise, and cheese). Since then I've cut out gluten pretty much 100% and I recently got into the Paleo diet. Not eating all that grain and gluten has made me feel 1000% better, and on the occasions that I do eat it poorly I usually feel sick. Joining Garage Gym was the best decision I could have made, it was what I looked forward to 5 days a week. I have become more knowledgeable, fitter, and a stronger because of it.
Words of Advice from Justin
When the trainer tells you to go at 90%, go at 90% or you're going to have a tough time with that workout!
Before and After: 6 months

Now 205 x 1
Deadlift
start- 200 lbs x 8 reps
Now 235 x 8
1 Rep Max 325
Back Squat
Start 210 x 3
Now 240 x 6
1 RM Max 285
Strict overhead Press
start 125 x 1
Now it's 145 x 1
Ring dips
Start- Assisted Band ring dips @ body weight
Now I can do 12 reps with no assistance
Weighted Chinup
Start- 4 tough reps at bodyweight
Now- 105 lb weighted 1 rep max (insane)
I accomplished my first ever muscle ups on the rings, can do 40+ double unders unbroken compared to maybe 1 or 2 in a row before, my running and aerobic capacity feels the strongest it ever has.
Justin is a great example of what hard work produces. Justin trained at Garage Gym 4-5x/wk and never missed a session. He works 12-14 hr days with limited sleep some nights but always managed to make his sessions. He also drove 30 min to the gym. Justin understood that maintaining and increasing your fitness levels takes a commitment more than just a "half in, half out, I already have an excuse to fail" attitude. He came to us with goals and a heart and that's all we look for with clients who are looking to change their lives forever.
